coffee Waste could fuel your car

Scientists have made biofuel from ground coffee produced in 20 different geographic regions - including caffeinated and decaffeinated forms.

The study found different varieties of coffee, including Robusta and Arabica, have reasonably standard composition and relevant physical properties of fuel.

This means all coffee waste could be a "viable" way of producing biodiesel, scientists from the University's Centre for Sustainable Chemical Technologies said.

Waste produced from the average coffee shop - around 10kg per day - was found to produce around two litres of biofuel.

Chris Chuck, Whorrod research fellow at the university, said the research highlighted the potential for waste coffee to be a "truly sustainable" biofuel.

"Around eight million tonnes of coffee are produced globally each year and ground waste coffee contains up to 20 per cent oil per unit weight," Dr Chuck said.

"This oil also has similar properties to current feedstocks used to make bio…

Amazing the Gold plated or gold foil car?

Gold-plated Lamborghini Aventador parked by Plaza Athenee palace hotel on the luxury Avenue Montaigne
The luxury car appears to be from Saudi Arabia and sports a distinctive 666 number plate
Last year solid gold model Lamborghini Aventador went on display in Dubai with a pricetag of $7.5 million

The car - which is valued at around £4 million and appears to be from Saudi Arabia - was parked outside the Plaza Athenee palace hotel on the luxury Avenue Montaigne

Sporting a distinctive 666 number plate, the gold-plated supercar appears to be the same one which has been turning heads in the French capital over the past few days.

Car enthusiasts have filmed the gold plated vehicle, which features a 6.5-litre V12 engine delivering 692 hp, driving through some of Paris's most exclusive.

Mercedes-Benz G-wagen, creating an even more aggressive demeanour for the stunning G63 AMG.

The lightweight carbonfibre kit comprises re-engineered front and rear bumpers, new front grille and headlight surrounds, wider wheel arches, bolder bonnet treatment, side skirts with an anti-slip coating on their upper surfaces, re-designed tail-lamp surrounds, and carbon replacements for the door handles, rubbing strips, door mirrors, induction vents and spare wheel cover.

In addition to the body styling enhancements, the Indomitable G is fitted with a set of six-spoke Prindiville Design alloy wheels, engineered for the weight of the vehicle, and uprated brake discs and calipers to cope with an extra 50bhp. The power hike is made possible by a remapped ECU and a Prindiville sports exhaust system; the automatic gearbox’s software is also recalibrated to take into account the performance boost. Further performance tuning is available, according the whim and budget of the customer.

Yamaha launches Fascino scooter

India Yamaha Motor has just announced the launch of its Fascino automatic scooter.
The automatic Fascino is powered by Yamaha's patented Blue Core technology. It is powered by a 113cc, four-stroke, single-cylinder and air-cooled engine and uses a pair of valves per cylinder for intake and exhaust duty. The new scooter makes 7bhp at 7,500rpm and peak torque of 0.8kgm is produced at 5,000rpm. It comes with the CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) type gearbox.
The Fascino gets telescopic suspension upfront and a monoshock will do duty at rear. It gets 10 inch wheels and seat height is at 775mm.

With a fuel tank capacity of 5.2 litres, Yamaha's latest offering weighs 103kg. Available in red, white, black and two shades of blue, the fashionably styled Fascino is priced at Rs 52,500 (ex-showroom, Delhi).

How does a cryogenic engine works?

First lets understand what Cryogenics means -

It is the study of the production of materials at extremely cold temperatures. The temperatures studied in cryogenics are those below -243.67 degrees Fahrenheit (120 Kelvin); such low temperatures do not occur in nature.
A cryogenic rocket engine is a rocket engine that uses a cryogenic fuel or oxidizer, that is, its fuel or oxidizer (or both) is gases liquefied and stored at very low temperatures.

Need for low temperatures:

Hypothetically, if propellants had been stored as pressurized gases, the size and mass of fuel tanks themselves would severely decrease rocket efficiency. Therefore, to get the required mass flow rate, the only option was to cool the propellants down to cryogenic temperatures (below ?150 °C, ?238 °F), converting them to liquid form. Hence, all cryogenic rocket engines are also, by definition, either liquid-propellant rocket engines or hybrid rocket engines
Basic structure of a rocket:The major components of a cryogenic ro…

Porsche patents a variable-compression-ratio engine to boost power and fuel efficiency

Porsche has received a patent on a new form of the variable-compression-ratio engine. This would be especially useful with turbocharged engines that today run at lower compression ratios, to avoid over-stressing the engine when the turbocharger is forcing more air into the combustion chambers. The patent was sought by Porsche’s huge consulting arm along with Porsche client Hilite International, suggesting the engine technology might be offered to other automakers if and when it’s made commercially viable.
Why variable compression ratio mattersToday’s gasoline-engine cars compress the outside air to about a tenth its original volume, a 10:1 ratio, inside each cylinder. Compress it more and you get detonation – also called knock or ping – before the spark plug ignites the air-fuel mixture at or near top dead center, when the piston is at the top of its travel. Technology has raised compression ratios to 11:1 or 12:1 and as high as 13:1 in Mazda SkyActiv cars. Premium-grade gasoline allows…

Most powerful diesel engine in the world

Designed to provide the motive force for a variety of supertankers and container ships, it comes in 6 cylinder in-line through to a whopping 14 cylinder version. The cylinder bore is 38 inches and the stroke is just over 98 inches. Each cylinder displaces 111,143 cubic inches (1820 litres) and produces 7780 horsepower. Total displacement comes out to 1,556,002 cubic inches (25,480 litres) for the 14-cylinder version. At a length of 89 feet and a height of 44 feet, the total engine weight is 2300 tons - the crankshaft alone weighs 300 tons. The RTA96C-14 can achieve a maximum power output of 108,920 hp at 102 rpm and astonishingly, at maximum economy the engine exceeds 50% thermal efficiency. That means, more than 50% of the energy in the fuel is converted to motion. Its Brake Specific Fuel Consumption (BSFC) at maximum power is 0.278 lbs/hp/hr. Ship owners like a single engine/single propeller design and the new generation of larger container ships needed a bigger engine to propel them.W…
