It’s pretty much safe to say that self-driving (autonomous) cars are going to be speeding along our roads in the future. They might not arrive as early as we would like them to – with the exception of Tesla Motors’ three-year plan
You see, up to 90% of deadly accidents caused on the road today are from human error – mistakes people make while driving. Some of these errors include speeding, aggressive driving, and foolishly operating a vehicle under the influence. They sound more like poor choices than “errors” if you ask me. Well, regardless, self-driving cars are designed to take away human error, and their predicted effects are incredibly hopeful.
According to a new study from the Eno Center for Transportation, if a mere 10% of cars on the road were replaced with autonomous vehicles, up to 1,000 deadly accidents would be prevented in the US. If that weren’t enough, the nation would save roughly $38 billion from reduced traffic congestion. Less accidents and open roads? Sounds good to me! Well, if 90% of cars on the street drove themselves, the US would also see 21,700 lives saved from accidents and an extra $447 billion left over!
There are still some problems with self-driving cars, such as who should be blamed if “it” gets in an accident. Would it be the lifeless machine’s fault or the human who was being driven around and doing nothing? Once these issues are sorted out, though, I think the term “road rage” will slowly fade away.
