Audi is set to reveal a concept at the upcoming 2014 Los Angeles

Auto Show that lays out the design strategy of its new design chief Marc Lichte, who only took over the design reins at the German automaker late last year. Kia creates eco-karma with electric Soul

The first things that you notice about any electric vehicle is just how quietly they move as well as the seemingly effortless acceleration. The Kia Soul EV is no exception. With a zero-to-60 time of about 12 seconds and a top speed of 90 mph, the Kia isn't mind-bogglingly fast, but something about the lack of powertrain noise or vibration and the delivery of torque without interruptions for gear changes makes the EV feel more nimble than the numbers imply.
Silent, but torquey

So how about those numbers? The 2015 Kia Soul is powered by an 81.4 kW AC synchronous permanent magnet motor that outputs a stated 109 horsepower and 210 pound-feet of torque. Like all full-electrics, the Soul EV's party trick is that it is able to deliver all 210 pound-feet of that torque from a dead stop, which makes it feel more responsive than a gasoline-powered engine of similar spec, simply because you never have to wait for it to build engine revs and power.

Toyota developing free piston engine linear generator for hybrid cars

Toyota is hot on hydrogen fuel cells for its next-generation cars, but it’s not going cold on internal combustion just yet.

The company’s R&D division has developed a Free Piston Engine Linear Generator that can convert gasoline and other fuels into electricity more efficiently than existing systems.

It’s a technology that could lead to lighter, more efficient, better-packaged powertrains for plug-in hybrid cars.

Instead of connecting a separate generator to the crankcase of an internal combustion engine, the linear generator turns the piston itself into a generator, reducing the overall size and mechanical complexity of the machine.

Opposite the combustion end is a sealed chamber that acts as a gas spring to cycle the piston in lieu of the rotational action of a crank. In this case, a section of the piston is constructed of a magnetic material that interacts with coils in the walls of the chamber to generate electricity.

New smart car tech could display traffic signs inside vehicles

Researchers at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute are in the process of developing a new way to save fuel and money with technology that could display traffic signs inside of vehicles.

, the dashboard screen would display stop, yield and other signs, removing the need for external road signs and automatically notifying the driver of upcoming commands. The thought is that drivers would no longer need to stop and wait at traffic signs if there are no other cars in the vicinity.

Alexandria Noble, a master’s student who is working with the researchers, said: “The idea is there would be no physical stop or yield signs on the side of the road, but they would be inside the vehicle.”

The study is being funded by the US Department of Transportation and spearheaded by Noble under direction from project manager Thomas A. Dingus. The transportation institute’s Human Factors Transportation Safety Graduate Certificate Program was recently launched, with Noble being the first student.

BMW open to sharing battery Technology

ULSAN, South Korea -- BMW is open to sharing with rival automakers the electric-vehicle battery cell technology it co-developed with Samsung SDI.

BMW purchasing boss Klaus Draeger said sharing the technology would reduce the cost of the battery cells -- the most expensive part of an EV.

"If Mercedes called us, we would be happy to find a way with Samsung SDI to supply them with battery cells," Draeger said.

BMW said it plans to increase battery cell orders from Samsung SDI, its exclusive supplier, by "at least" 20 to 30 percent in 2016 from the 2014 level.

The supply deal was part of an agreement the companies signed last week that also included co-development of a next generation of battery cells.

Samsung SDI will increase its supply for the BMW i3 battery-powered city car and i8 plug-in hybrid sports coupe and will supply batteries for future BMW hybrids starting with the X5 plug-in hybrid crossover, Draeger said.

Electric Micro Car to launch in China with 99mile range

The Chinese auto industry may be relatively new, but record levels of pollution and plenty of government prodding already have it diving headlong into electric car development.

The latest electric car to come out of the country is the Dongfeng Aeolus E30, which recently started production at the company’s plant in Wuhan.

Named after the Greek god of winds, the Aeolus E30 looks like a Smart ForTwo knockoff and comes in two sizes: regular wheelbase, and long wheelbase, four-seat E30L.

A 25-kilowatt (33.5hp) electric motor can only muster enough power to get the Aeolus E30 up to 49mph, while range is reportedly pegged at 99 miles per charge. A full charge for the 18-kilowatt-hour lithium-phosphate battery pack takes about eight hours, but there appears to be a DC fast-charging option as well, with an 80-percent charge likely taking a half hour.

Audi's glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) springs will save weight compared to steel springs

The glass fiber-reinforced polymer, or GFRP, springs will save about 40 percent of the weight of steel springs, cutting about 2.5 pounds per spring for a larger mid-size car That amounts to a savings of 9.7 pounds total, half of which is unsprung mass.

Unsprung mass relates directly to a car’s handling and ride quality, and reducing it can yield even larger dividends than a similar weight reduction from the car’s sprung mass (i.e., from the car’s body). ford has shown a lightweight concept car using same technology, but hasn't announced any plans for production.

Audi add a new 1.4 TFSI engine to the A3 model range

Audi is updating the engine range of the A3 model range with the addition of a new 1.4 TFSI engine, which develops 110 kW (150 hp). What is great about this engine, though, is the fuel consumption of just 4.7 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (50.0 US mpg) over the combined cycle or an equivalent of 109 g/km (175.4 g/mi) of CO2 emissions .

Still the A3 with the new 1.4 TFSI only needs 8.1 seconds to reach the speed of 100 km/h (62.1 mph) from standstill and keeps accelerating up until its top speed of 220 km/h (136.7 mph) – pretty impressive from a small engine of 1.4 litres of displacement, without any hybrid technology or active aerodynamic systems. The only fuel saving technology offered is Audi’s cylinder on demand technology and a choice of either a six speed manual gearbox or the familiar 7‑speed S-Tronic.

Ferrari’s one-offs are custom-made to melt the internet. Images leaked just a few weeks ago of an SP America, about which no further information has been forthcoming. But last week’s mystery car, which was taking part in a Targa Florio tribute in Sicily, has now been officially confirmed by Maranello.
It’s called the F12 TRS and, as the name suggests, it takes its cue from the late-1950s 250 Testa Rossa, one of Ferrari’s most revered endurance racing cars.
The chopped roof, windscreen and side glass are the obvious visual highlights, along with the fairings on the rear deck that offer the clearest connection to those ridiculously sexy Fifties endurance racers. The SP division is bound by strict rules on homologation, so the car’s hard points and the height of the lights, for example, are fixed. Renault India is planning to launch its own take for the entry-level hatchback segment and is codenamed XBA. Instead of using Datsun Go as a base, Renault will use the CMF-A platform which it announced along with Nissan last year.
The CMF-A is a bit like the versatile Volkswagen MQB platform and allows various body style and power train combinations. The development work for CMF-A is being carried out in the Renault-Nissan plant near Chennai. This platform could also be used for Datsun redi-Go, although, the redi-Go will probably be placed above the Go.
The XBA will also mark the entry of a new 1.0-litre petrol engine from Renault. The engine has not been revealed yet and is still in the development stage. Apart from India, the XBA car will also be manufactured in Brazil.

Google's Auto Link In-Car System To Rival Apple CarPlay

Auto Link is the first product developed in conjunction with the Open Automotive Alliance, a group of companies including Audi, General Motors Company,,Hyundai, chipmaker NVIDIA Corp and Google itself. Just like CarPlay, it's not an "embedded" system but a "projected" one—an operating system that uses a driver's own smartphone operating system. In this case, that's Google's Android OS available on a multitude of hand-held devices.

The interface hasn't yet been revealed, nor has any announcement been made as to which automaker will use the system first.
