Nissan Working on Electric Vehicle Battery

The Japanese automaker is currently working on new battery technology that will debut in early 2017 and will offer more than double the range the current Leaf has. Nissan executives have expressed that the key to having a successful electric vehicle in today’s market is better range and the new battery chemistry will be used by both Nissan and Infiniti in their electric vehicles

Nissan hasn’t shared a target range, the company’s executive vice president for its zero emissions businesses previously noted that 186 miles is a mark that EVs must hit to present an everyday alternative to the new hydrogen fuel-cell cars.

New diesel piston cooling technology

Federal-Mogul Powertrain, a division of Federal-Mogul Holdings Corporation, has developed a first in piston cooling technology by creating a sealed-for-life coolant chamber within the crown of its market-leading Monosteel heavy-duty diesel piston. Delivering superior cooling efficiency with minimum weight, EnviroKool is the latest evolution of Federal-Mogul Powertrain’s proven Monosteel technology. An integral cooling gallery is created within a steel piston using friction-welded construction and then filled during the manufacturing process with a high temperature oil and an inert gas, before being permanently sealed with a welded plug.

Ricardo and Recycling Technologies to characterize Plaxx plastic-waste-derived-fuel for marine applications

UK-based Recycling Technologies is industrializing a process—originally developed at the University of Warwick (UK)—to convert residual plastic waste into a low-sulfur hydrocarbon compound called Plaxx. Plaxx is created from residual mixed plastic waste that is not amenable to direct recycling and would otherwise go to landfill. The company, a 2013 spin-out from the University, is now working with Ricardo tocharacterize the use of this recycled, low-sulfur fuel as a substitute for fossil based heavy fuel oil (HFO) and diesel in applications such as power generation and marine propulsion.

In addition to the loss of its material value, the carbon cost of processing this mixed waste is considerable, not least due to transportation, as many regions and states export their mixed plastic waste due to a lack of localized processing facilities. Olli, a 3D printed, self-driving minibus

Olli, a 3D printed minibus capable of transporting 12 passengers.The vehicle was launched by Arizona startup Local Motors outside of the US capital city, Washington. 
The electric, self driving shuttle was created in a partnership with IBM, using their Watson supercomputer.

What Is Olli: Olli was designed to be like Uber; on demand transportation solution that can be summoned with an app. It can also be printed to spec in a matter of hours. Olli will be demonstrated in National Harbor, Maryland, over the next few months with additional trials expected in Las Vegas and Miami. Local Motors is also in talks to test the vehicles in dozens of cities around the world, including Berlin, Copenhagen, and Canberra.
