Tyre Pressure Technology and how it can help you prevent flat-tyres

What is Tyre Pressure Technology?

A Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) can help you determine and alert, well before you have a flat tyre. It is an electronic, safety and maintenance system that detects the pressure of all the tyres of a car and alarms you in case the pressure is dangerously low.

What is the need for TPMS?

TPMS is mandatory for some of the countries assuring the safety and maintenance of the car as well as the driver.

How can TPMS be used?

The system needs to be installed on each tyre of the car after which it functions to indicate the pressure of the tyres and if they need to be inflated or not.

TPMS can be of two types:

• Direct TPMS

• Indirect TPMS

Let’s discuss each type in brief.

Direct TPMS:

Sensors are fitted on each individual car tyre and their pressures are measured using these sensors. These sensors read the internal pressure and sometimes the temperatures too. The analysis of the information received is done and the system determines if the pressure is too low or sufficient enough to show it directly on the car’s dashboard.

It is generally recommended by the manufacturers to keep the tyre pressure above 25% of the normal pressure.

Merits:

• Accurate

• Long lasting battery

• Actual pressure information

• No reset required after inflation of the tyre

• Information relayed directly to driver

Demerits:

• Non-serviceable battery

• More expensive than Indirect TPMS

• Requires skilled installation and servicing

• Costlier maintenance

• Requires extra parts and labor

Indirect TPMS:

Indirect TPMS doesn’t work with pressure sensors but instead, it relies on the wheel speed sensor data also used by the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS). The monitoring system determines the speed of revolution of the tyres which, if more than usual alerts the driver of lower pressure.

Merits:

• Inexpensive than Direct TPMS

• Less programming required than a Direct TPMS

Demerits:

• Might get inaccurate if tyre size is changed

• Inaccuracy in case of the uneven surface of tyres

• Needs to be reset after inflation of tyres
